Energy and Resources

<

Due to the success of last year’s conference strategy of having the whole conference focus one core topic, BRIMUN 2010 will once again concentrate on one single theme: Energy and Resources. This will lead to higher interconnectedness and interdependence amongst committees, dealing with different aspects of the topic ranging from global warming to scarcity of resources and energy security, whilst incorporating current and overarching issues like the financial crisis and poverty.

During the last two decades, global warming has become an ever more important topic on the political agenda of governments, as more accurate scientific research has been conducted and nongovernmental organizations and agents have become involved.

Furthermore in today's world, energy security has become highly problematic. The Middle East as the main-exporter of fossil fuels has experienced several major crises and oligopolies in the energy sector making many states more and more dependent on the goodwill of energy-exporting countries. This is further effected by the fact that fossil fuels will run out in the next decades and the world has to look for new sources of energy production.

In the end, resources are going to determine our future and the interconnectedness of the topic with more general issues like poverty prove this: how can we overcome the resource curse leading to instability and conflict in resource rich countries? How can we stabilize the resource market in times of economic crisis to not invoke suffering in the third world? How can energy consuming industries be sustained in a future without fossil fuels?

In passionate and enthralling debates, delegates at BRIMUN 2010 will discuss these pressing issues. Whilst they are engaged in controversial arguments, the situation will become more and more complex as the conference crisis unfolds. Delegates will be challenged to react to an international emergency, requiring their full attention and flexibility. Will they be able to maintain world stability and solve our planet’s resource crisis?
